The Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (HOPP) is a hospital department focused on addressing challenges presented by cancer research in the era of targeted therapies. By bringing together researchers in many disciplines, HOPP’s goal is to advance scientific knowledge while bridging discoveries made in the laboratory with those made in the clinic. The department has grown to a faculty of nearly 20 physician-scientists, each with independent laboratories and research programs, and approximately 300 research and administrative staff.
Serve as a key member of the leadership team with a primary focus on administrative leadership, program budget development and oversight, operational and strategic planning, and implementation of policies and systems.
With input from the Director, lead the development and implementation of operating, capital, and funded budgets for the department and its laboratories.
Plan and manage the administrative and programmatic activities within HOPP to insure efficient and effective operations.
Partner in the support of departmental projects, staff recruitment, personnel oversight and serve as a primary resource of issues and communications.
Partner closely with scientific leadership to help advance research.
With an understanding of HOPP’s mission, propose strategies for implementing new initiatives and metrics for monitoring success.
Be responsible for effectively supervising staff to ensure the most professional, organized, efficient and appropriate management of research operations in an environment that encourages staff development, continuous improvement, and the highest quality service.
Act in a leadership role on the management team, providing guidance to faculty, trainees and staff, and serve as a primary resource for solving issues and managing communication.
Lead special projects and other job-related activities as assigned by the Director.

A Bachelors degree in science or business plus 6-8 years of research or administrative experience in a managerial role OR a Masters degree plus 5-7 years, OR a PhD plus 4-6 years.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
The ability to set priorities among several tasks simultaneously and meet established deadlines.
Intellectual curiosity, quick ability to learn and ask questions.
Ability to develop, analyze and draw conclusions from financial and statistical data.
Advanced proficiency in use of computers and software such as database management, spreadsheet, word processing and graphics applications. Ability to learn data systems utilized at MSKCC is essential.
