The Assistant Dean supports the mission of Alcohol and Other Drug Services (AODS) to engage all members of the MIT community in an integrated effort to enhance academic, social, and personal development for students. The Assistant Dean is the content expert on campus for all issues related to the intervention, prevention, and education about substance use and abuse. The Assistant Dean will develop a comprehensive approach to address issues of student substance use and abuse at MIT with specific focus on alcohol and other drugs. The Assistant Dean reports to the Associate Dean for Student Support and Wellbeing and works in partnership with Violence Prevention and Response (VPR) and the CARE Team. The Assistant Dean works with students, colleagues in the Division for Student Life (DSL), various offices and departments across MIT, city officials and agencies in Cambridge and Boston, and with national agencies and professional colleagues. The Assistant Dean will advise students and student groups working on a variety of programs related to community development as well as substance use/abuse.
Lead collaborative efforts to develop evidence-based policies and programs to address alcohol and other drug abuse and their secondhand effects.
Oversee the alcohol and other drug intervention program for undergraduate and graduate students
Develop, implement, and interpret program assessments.
Oversee work of Assistant Director of Education and Outreach and unpaid graduate student interns
Oversee AODS budget
Prepare annual reports and other confidential reports and analyses as requested
Educate, Advise and Train the MIT Community
Collaborate with students, faculty, staff (including MIT Medical/Mental Health and Counseling), to develop, implement and evaluate educational prevention strategies to address student decision-making and behaviors associated with the use of illegal drugs
Work with community partner, EverFi, and the office for Undergraduate Advising and Academic Programming to implement AlcoholEdu to incoming freshmen class each year
Tailor programs to targeted groups including athletes, fraternities, sororities, independent living groups, etc.
Develop and disseminate print and web based educational materials and relevant information.
Serve as a resource of information about alcohol and other drug issues, student wellness, and crisis response.
Coordinate orientation programs around substance use and wellness
Work collaboratively with campus partners including VPR, Student Support Services, Graduate Personal Support, and Undergraduate Advising and Academic Programming.
Consultation and Collaboration with Other Universities and Agencies
Prepare biannual DFSCA report and ensure Institute compliance with DFSCA regulations
Consult and collaborate with interested colleges, consortiums, and the local communities on how to address health promotion and community building on college campuses.
Assist with crisis response as necessary with Student Support and Wellbeing offices
Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean or Senior Associate Dean of Student Support and Wellbeing
Supervision is received from the Associate Dean of Student Support and Wellbeing.
Supervision exercised over the Assistant Director of Education and Outreach, and graduate interns and shared responsibility for administrative assistant.

Qualifications and Education
Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Public Health, Higher Education, Student Personnel Management or related area with 5 years minimum required along with sufficient experience working in a university setting. Demonstrated commitment to the development of comprehensive crisis management and health behavior programming models and evaluation mechanisms is required. Must possess the ability to make independent decisions and oversee office operations. Excellent organizational skills, combined with strong communication and writing skills essential. Must be flexible, have attention to detail, ability to prioritize work. Excellent interpersonal skills, especially the ability to build collaborative relationships, exercise good judgment and provide educational programs and initiatives. Demonstrate flexibility, sensitivity, and ability to think critically and broadly about issues relating to students of various backgrounds. Experience in a diverse, high intensity academic environment is desired, as is the ability to think critically and broadly about issues facing student living and learning communities. This position requires evening and weekend work.
